Chapter Ten: Eyes

Blogtober 2021 Story Project

Chaim fell to his knees, tears streaming from his eyes, and tore a small rip along the neckline of his robe. Lucius didn’t share his religion, but he had seen cities laid to waste before, but none quite as completely decimated as Jerusalem.

“Please forgive me,” Chaim said. “We need to get away from here and find shelter.”

“We understand,” Kamali said. “It’s so horrible.”

“When I was a boy, my parents would bring us here for Rosh Hashanah,” Chaim said. “Even under Roman control, this city was still the promise the Lord made to Abraham. When I met a man named Paul in Damascus, he convinced me that Yeshua was our messiah. I came back here with him to meet the leaders of the Way, the same men who saw the messiah raised from the dead.”

“I’ve seen death all my life,” Lucius said. “I’ve never seen a dead man come back to life.”

“It was difficult for me to believe as well,” Chaim said. “But I looked each of them in the eyes, and I saw the truth of their witness. Now it’s all gone, the Jews and the Apostles…all laid to waste here.”

“We are missing something,” Kamali said. “The men who took us brought us here, but for what purpose? Why bring us to a city of death?”

“I don’t plan on staying long enough to find out,” Lucius said.

“We need to know,” Chaim said. “We may be the only ones who can stop them.”
