Chapter Six: Poison

Blogtober 2021 Story Project

“We cannot go back,” Chaim said.

“We cannot fight three of them,” Kamali said.

“I can,” Lucius said. “I have fought more than three men many times.”

“Not men like these,” Kamali said.

“Run through the chamber to distract them,” Lucius said, “and find a shadow to hide. They will follow you, and that’s when I will strike.”

“Don’t let them bite you,” Kamali said. “Their bite is poison.”

“They are not snakes,” Chaim said.

“No,” Kamali said. “Much worse.”

She ran across the chamber and let out a scream. The men turned at the sound and saw her dart into a passage on the other side of the room. Lucius pulled a torch from the wall and struck the closest hooded man on the head. He crumpled to the floor.

The other two turned on Lucius, who struck one on the arm. The second moved to attack, but he stumbled forward as Chaim hit him with a second torch. Lucius took advantage of the moment and knocked him out with a blow to the side of the head. Chaim tripped the third, and Lucius smashed his head with three sharp cracks.

They dragged the men into a closet and barricaded the door. Kamali returned and said, “I think I’ve found a way out.”

“Do you know where we are?” Lucius asked. She shook her head.

“Let’s hope we don’t find ourselves in the middle of the desert,” he said. As they left the chamber, bells rang through the halls.
