Kamali led the men up an inclined hallway that ended in a T-corridor. She entered the room on the right and pointed to a narrow window at the top of the wall.
“A star,” she said. “We are near the outside.”
“Good work,” Chaim said.
“Except there is no way out of this room,” Lucius said. “Stay here while I check the other.” He returned after a few moments.
“Good news and bad news,” he said. “The other room has a trap door in the ceiling.”
“The bad news?” Chaim asked.
“There’s more coming up the hallway,” he said. “Kamali, can you do that trick that got us out of the cell again?”
“It’s not a trick, it’s a sophisticated and complex spell,” she replied. “Yes, I can, but I have to be seated to focus the spell outside myself. I can’t walk out with you.”
“Can we carry you?” Chaim asked.
“As long as I don’t break my concentration, that could work,” she said.
“Do it,” Lucius said. “They’ll be here at any moment. Make it appear that you’re running out of this room into the other. If it works, they’ll open the trap door thinking we already went through it.”
She sat in the floor in the shadows behind the door, and the men stood on either side of her, all of them hoping the bread spell was still working.
The image of Kamali appeared, and Lucius opened the door to let her mislead the guards.
