“Do what I say if you want to live,” the girl said.
“What can you do that soldiers cannot?” Lucius said.
“No time to explain,” she said. “I hear their steps approaching. Sit beside each other in front of me. Do not move or speak when they arrive. They are coming for the other.”
“We should do as she says,” Chaim said.
“Are you willing to gamble your life on an unarmed child?” Lucius said.
“Yeshua said that we must have the faith of a child to enter the kingdom of heaven,” Chaim replied. “Brute force will fail. Let’s put our faith in her.”
“My faith is in my sword,” Lucius said.
“And where is that?” the girl asked. “Sit down, now!”
The men complied, and as they sat still and silent, they heard the guards approach. They wore black robes with large hoods that obscured their faces. One stood at the door while two others picked up the Libyan and dragged him out of the cell.
Lucius had the discipline of an experienced soldier, so he showed no reaction when he saw the girl appear behind the first guard. Her form was like smoke and shadow, and she moved as the guard moved, following him out of the cell.
The footfalls receded, and when it was silent again, the bolt slid from the door, and the girl entered. Lucius turned, and she was still seated behind him.
“You are a witch,” he said.
“I am a magician,” she replied.
