Chapter Five: Bread

Blogtober 2021 Story Project

“What is your name?” Chaim asked.

“I am Kamali,” she said. She reached inside her robe and removed three pieces of bread.

“Eat these,” she said.

“Why?” Lucius asked. It was no more than a morsel.

“These men can see in the dark,” she said. “The bread is enchanted. It will help us blend into the shadows when we need to hide.”

“You eat it first,” Lucius said. She ate the bread without hesitation and stood up. When she pressed herself into a dark corner, then men could not see her. They ate the bread without further protest.

“Follow me,” Kamali said, and they exited the cell into a dark corridor.

“Do you know where we are?” Lucius whispered.

Chaim shook his head. “Where were you taken?” he asked.

“Alexandria,” Lucius said. “What about you?”

“Damascus,” Chaim replied.

“Be quiet,” Kamali said. “Someone is coming.”

They pressed themselves into a dark recess beside a stone column and stood silently. Two more hooded figures passed by, headed toward their cell.

“We have to hurry,” she said. “They will sound an alarm when they find the cell empty.”

They walked as fast as they could without making noise with their footsteps. She led them through three turns until they found a staircase. Torches glowed against the walls of the chamber above.

Kamali led them up the stairs. She paused with each step, listening for any movement above. When she reached the top, she turned and shook her head, holding up three fingers.
