Chapter Eight: Ladder

Blogtober 2021 Story Project

Lucius and Chaim bent to pick Kamali up, but she stiffened and said, “Wait.” They had heard footsteps and the door to the other room slam shut, but nothing else since.

Kamali was silent for several minutes. When she opened her eyes, she said, “I know the way out.”

“You saw it?” Chaim asked.

“All I had to do was follow them up the ladder through the trap door,” she said. “The room above leads to the outside.”

“Will they be waiting for us?” Lucius said.

“They could be anywhere outside,” Kamali said. “But we cannot stay here.”

“You’re right,” Lucius said. “Well done on leading them away.” She waited until Lucius turned away from her to smile.

They crept across the hallway into the other room without incident. Lucius hoisted Kamali onto his shoulders to open the trap door and lower the ladder. They climbed into the end of a short passage that led to the exit. Before they could replace the ladder and trap door, the exit opened.

Kamali and Chaim hid in the shadows, but Lucius ran behind the door. Two hooded men entered and peered down into the room below. Lucius charged them from behind, crashing into them both and knocking them down through the space.

He pulled up the ladder and replaced the door, and then he turned toward the exit, motioning for the others to follow him. He opened the exit to scan for guards, but he wasn’t prepared for what he saw.
