Chapter 31: Captivate

Blogtober 2022 Day 31 entry

Eila found it strange that someone she just met could captivate her from the start, but it was no stranger than how Adriana appeared on the Beaumaris.

Wynn performed several magical tests upon Adriana, all inconclusive. She was a human female with no apparent magical powers or residue of magical effects.

“Give credit to God,” Wynn said. “I have no other explanation.”

The voyage to Corinth took them four days, and they stayed in port two more days to trade for olive oil, wine, and spices.

Eila accompanied Adriana to her home, where her family was happy to see her but gave no indication that she had been missing. Adriana invited her to stay for dinner, which Eila accepted.

She accepted the invitation for the second day as well, and when the third day arrived, Eila said she had to return home.

“I will miss you,” Adriana said. “Isn’t that strange, to miss someone you only met?”

“Sometimes we just know,” Eila said. “It was like that for me the first time I set foot on a ship. I knew at that moment that I wanted a life at sea.”

“You will come back, won’t you?”

“An ocean of storms couldn’t keep me away.”

When Eila returned to the Beaumaris, she found the crew ill, many hanging over the railing like greenhorns.

“What’s happened?” Eila asked.

“Dizzy spells,” Rhys said. “Everyone, all at once. It felt like we were falling.”

“Can we sail?” she asked.

“Yes, captain.”

“Let’s go home.”
