Chapter 30: Yearn

Blogtober 2022 Day 30 entry

Eila staggered on the bridge, struck with the feeling she had jumped from a high ledge. She felt dizzy and disoriented, a condition compounded by the strange woman standing next to her who appeared out of nowhere.

Rhys climbed to the bridge with his sword drawn. “Captain, step back!” he said.

“Stand down, Rhys,” Eila said. “She’s unarmed. Go find Wynn.”

Rhys did as ordered, and Eila asked the woman, “Who are you? How did you get here?”

The woman shrugged and shook her head. She spoke a sentence that Eila recognized as Greek. Her royal education and several voyages to Greece gave her enough knowledge to communicate.

“I’m Eila Ellesmere, captain of the Beaumaris,” Eila said. “We’re in port in Barcelona. How did you get here?”

“My name is Adriana,” she said. “I am from Corinth, but the last thing I remember is being on a ship in a storm.”

“We are sailing for home today,” Eila said.

“Where is home?”

“Llanfyllin, on the island of Brittania.”

“Can you help me get home?” Adriana asked. “I have no gold and no possessions to trade.”

“We have many friends here in Barcelona,” Eila said. “I’m sure I could find a ship headed east.”

Adriana smiled at Eila’s kindness, and in that moment, Eila felt her heart yearn for this stranger as if she were a long-lost friend.

“Have we met before?” Eila asked. “I’ve had the most peculiar sensation, as if we’ve already known each other.”

“I feel it, too.”
