Kamali placed a gentle kiss upon Lucius’ forehead, and he opened his eyes. They were in a different cell than before, but locked away together again, and Lucius suspected her magic would not enable them to escape this time.
“Who are you?” Lucius said.
“Why do you ask that?”
“The Libyan talked about his master and a prophecy,” Lucius said, “and you said your magic is prophetic. This is not a coincidence, is it?”
“No,” she said. “I, too, am from Alexandria, though I was taken before you.”
“Why?”
“I saw what the hooded men were doing,” she said. “I also saw that this was only the beginning. If they succeed here, they will spread from city to city throughout the Empire.”
“Who are they?”
“We call them Lilitu,” she said. “They are the human offspring of a demon who feeds upon our blood, which extends their life long past the time of death.”
“But they are not immortal?”
“No, but hard to kill and much more powerful than any human,” she said.
“Can they be defeated?” he asked.
“Like any demonic hoard, they rely on their master to sustain them,” she replied. “Kill him, and the rest of them lose their power.”
“Why was I taken?” he asked. “Or Chaim? We are not from Jerusalem.”
“I saw you both in the prophecy, but I did not see your roles. When I was taken, the leader invaded my mind and saw what I saw. He took you to stop you.”
