“Try to find shelter near the road,” Lucius said. “If I’m not back by sunset, get moving west.”
“Where can we go?” Chaim asked.
“Alexandria,” Lucius said. “From there, you can hire a ship to anywhere in the world.”
“Where do you think they’ve taken Kamali?”
“I don’t have to guess—she’s in the same place we escaped from.”
Lucius wished the others well and ran back into the city. He moved cautiously from block to block, keeping himself sheltered behind ruined walls and fallen stone, but no one was present in the bright morning sun.
The entrance to their prison was easy to find, as it was one of the few buildings that had sustained little damage in the initial onslaught of the Romans. Lucius wondered if the hooded men arrived before the siege or after the invasion. Regardless, today would be the end, one way or another.
He retraced the route of their escape, taking care to make no noise in the halls. Like the city streets, the prison appeared to be empty. Lucius thought that if the hooded men did not appear in the daylight, they might all be asleep, but he doubted fate would be that fortunate.
When he reached the dungeon cells, he found no trace of Kamali or anyone else held captive. All the cell doors were unlocked, the cells empty.
As Lucius considered where to search next, a voice spoke in the darkness…
“Foolish man. We knew you would return for the girl.”
