Kamali opened her eyes and said, “There are too many of them. They caught my illusion. They are headed this way.”
“Chaim and the others are coming,” Lucius said, pointing to the group descending from the Temple plateau. “Is there anything else you can do?”
“My magic is mostly prophetic,” she said. “I cannot cast combat spells.”
“Can you see how the gods will roll the dice for us?” Lucius asked.
“No one can see like that.”
“They haven’t rolled ones on me yet,” Lucius said.
The Levites loaded the ark, and Lucius handed each of them a spear. “Chaim, you’re driving. You four, you’re with me. Kill anything that gets close to us.”
Chaim turned the horse back toward the Dung Gate, and the Roman minions closed upon them. Lucius knelt at the rear of the cart and killed three of the minions on the vanguard, but others converged upon them from the side streets.
The Levites impressed Lucius with their bravery, none of them wavering even as the minions drew closer with each attack. Chaim drove through the gate, and two of the undead Romans jumped into the cart. They grabbed Kamali and dragged her off the cart before Lucius could turn to defend her.
“Stop! Stop!” Lucius shouted.
“They’ll get us all if I do,” Chaim replied, driving the horse faster down the road. Lucius noticed at once that the minions ended their pursuit once they had captured Kamali.
“Stop now,” Lucius said. “They’ve stopped chasing us.”
