Blogtober 2022 Day 19 entry
Wynn left the chamber, which he named the “death portal” in his mind, before any of the others had a chance to exit. He walked rapidly to Eila’s residence, keeping off the streets and sidewalks and staying in the shadows.
He broke his invisibility spell and rapped on her door. She answered half-asleep, a robe thrown hastily around her shoulders.
“What is it?” she mumbled.
“Get dressed, Captain,” Wynn said. “We need to speak.”
“Can’t this wait until morning?”
“If it could, I wouldn’t have awakened you.”
She returned a few moments later, and they walked without speaking to a clearing on a ridge that couldn’t been seen from the city. The strange celestial heavens sparkled like a cave filled with every jewel imaginable. The beauty of the night sky made them both pine for their lost home.
Wynn told her everything he had seen, including Adriana’s role in the ceremony.
“What do you think they meant by ‘previous life’ and ‘new path?’” Eila asked.
“It could be their religious beliefs,” Wynn said. “Some kind of reincarnation.”
“Why use a portal like that?” she said. “Why didn’t they wait until he was dead?”
“They said he would have a new life,” Wynn said. “Maybe that portal sends them into a different dimension, like the realm where the faeries still live.”
“But why wait until a person is near death to do that?”
“There’s no way for us to know.”
“There is one way,” Eila said. “I’m going to ask Adriana.”
