Chapter 17: Malice

Blogtober 2022 Day 17 entry

Wynn had explored Atlantis at night for several weeks without uncovering any evidence of malice at the hands of its residents. He was free to wander through buildings without subterfuge; doors were kept unlocked, and he rarely saw anyone out after midnight.

The dark morning hours after Rhys’s comic tale, however, led him to his discovery. Wynn was heading toward the harbor, his invisibility spell cast as it was every night, when he heard footsteps approaching.

Several of the islanders were walking inland. Wynn kept a safe distance while keeping them in sight and followed them to the heart of the island. They came to a vine-covered cliff, where an incantation opened a hidden passage.

Wynn heard the words in Welsh, but they were nonsense. What the islanders didn’t know was that one of his skills was in languages, and Wynn could understand most of what they said in their native tongue. He committed the spell to memory and slipped inside before the cliff face closed.

The passage was a cave, which was lit with the same glowing orbs found throughout the city. Wynn understood that magic was, in part, power over the natural elements, and Atlantis had discovered how to unite magic and technology in practical ways. He suspected this was how their ships traveled, as well.

He counted twenty people gathered around a well in the floor. Two stone pedestals sat on the edge of the well. A faint light and a low hum came from within it.
