Chapter 17: Chair

Blogtober 2021 Story Project

“Yes,” the Levite said. “The ark of the covenant.”

“What is that?” Lucius asked.

“The most holy possession in Judaism,” Chaim said. “It contains the stone tablets of the Ten Commandments the Lord gave to Moses.”

“It is the mercy seat of our Lord,” said the second Levite. “It is the location of his presence in the Temple.”

“Your temple is destroyed,” Lucius said, “and I’m not risking my life for your God’s chair.”

“You do not understand,” Chaim said. “This cannot fall into the hands of these evil men.”

“What do you care?” Lucius said. “I thought you followed the Nazarene.”

“No man of conscience would ever hand this over to demons,” Chaim said. “We take the ark, or you can try to leave this place alone.”

“She’ll come with me,” Lucius said, pointing to Kamali.

“No, I won’t,” Kamali said. “We must stay together or die alone.”

“What are your names?” Chaim asked the teens.

“I am Samuel,” the first said. “These are Enoch, Simeon, and Issachar.”

“I am Chaim, and my friends are Lucius and Kamali.”

“How heavy is that thing?” Lucius asked.

“It takes all four of us to carry it,” Enoch said.

“We’ll never get out of the city that way,” Lucius said. “I’ll have to find a horse and cart if we stand any chance.”

“You won’t survive out there on your own,” Kamali said.

“That’s why you’re coming with me,” Lucius said, “along with two of these boys to carry you along.”
