Blogtober 2022 Day 14 entry
The meals did not match the extravagance of their first day, but their days were filled with delicious food, plentiful wine, and an abundance of leisure time.
Eila shed her uniform for a lavender robe and took her hair out of its usual bun into a ponytail. She and Adriana were sharing lunch near a brook when Wynn approached and asked her to join him for a walk.
“You’re still in your own robes,” Eila observed. “You’d be more comfortable in clean garments. Surely they’ve offered you some?”
“Hanging in my quarters,” Wynn said. “These feel comfortable enough. Have you been back to the ship?”
“Not yet,” Eila said. “We’ve only been here for a few days.”
“It’s a week already, and no one has been to the harbor,” Wynn said.
“We almost die at sea, and now you’re upset about extended shore leave?”
“I think they’re putting something in the wine,” Wynn said.
“You’re being paranoid,” she replied.
“We thought this island was a myth,” he said, “but it seems to be more like the myth of the Lotus-Eaters in Homer’s Odyssey.”
“What do you mean?”
“All this luxury is making you forget about home, and the wine is driving it.”
“Let’s go to the harbor, then, and see our ship,” she said.
Wynn was careful to avoid islanders, leading her to a secluded ridge overlooking the harbor he had found that morning, knowing that her discovery would vindicate his suspicions.
“It’s gone,” she said. “The Beaumaris is gone.”
