Chapter 11: Sacrifice

Blogtober 2021 Story Project

“We just saved our lives escaping from that dungeon,” Lucius said. “Now you want us to sacrifice our lives for an unknown purpose? I plan to live.”

“Every life is a sacrifice,” Chaim said. “Those who live to save themselves will always end with nothing, but those who give their lives for others will find eternal life.”

“Is that more of your Nazarite religion?” Lucius asked.

“You serve the emperor,” Chaim said. “Is that not a sacrifice?”

“It’s my profession,” Lucius replied. “I fight for my salary, not for a cause.”

“You fought to save us,” Kamali said. “You risked yourself against the hooded men. You could have left us behind.”

“The Romans destroyed the city,” Chaim said, “so reason dictates they are still in control. Let’s find your comrades and tell them what we know. They can use their might to return to this place and root out our captors.”

“We would be saving many people from the fate that befell the others in this dungeon,” Kamali said.

“I’ve never been here before,” Lucius said. “Can you lead us out?”

“Yes,” Chaim said. “The road below leads to the Damascus Gate.”

“We should have troops stationed at all points of egress,” Lucius said. “An attack upon a citizen of Rome is considered an attack on Rome itself. More so upon a Legionnaire. We report what we know, and then let that be the end of our involvement. I’ll arrange for safe passage for you both to get home.”
