Chapter 27: Underground

Blogtober 2023

Nicole leaned out of the window and shined the lamp on the creature. It writhed as if in pain, but it made no sound, which unnerved her more than its appearance, as its silence amplified its alien character.

She wanted to follow it, corner it, and kill it, but the lamp was corded and only extended a few feet away. They had planned for Nicole to protect herself, not attack the creature. She continued to point the lamp out, but once the creature moved out of its range, it began to expand and reshape itself.

Nicole stepped back into the truck and rolled the window up. She turned on the headlights, which shone on the alien and made it retreat but not recoil. It gave up hope of attacking Nicole and glided away down the side of the crater.

“Doug, it’s coming back your way,” she said into the radio. “Turn your headlights on and stay in the light. It won’t hurt you there.”

“That’s fine for me,” he replied. “But Joe Don’s underground setting up the bomb.”

“Then tell him to hurry,” she said.

Clarkton had already assembled all the chemicals into a large cardboard box, but he had to find the ship and set the timer before he could emerge from the hole. Besides the dark, the experience was made worse by the number of dead men surrounding him. They carried rocks away but seemed not to notice him at all. They led him to the ship.
