By sunrise, the crater was surrounded by vehicles from the sheriff's department and highway patrol, then joined by FBI and ATF sedans and crime scene vans. Nicole left the pickup to join Clarkton and Murphy on the scene to explain what happened.
The dead men inside or near the cavern had been blown apart and burned to ashes. Those beyond the blast collapsed, surrendering their alien reanimation to mundane death.
The only sign of the creature was a dark stain next to its ship. The blast had cracked the hull of the ship, but the metal showed no other signs of damage from blast or fire.
Nicole’s cell phone video proved to be their saving grace with the local authorities, showing both the dead at work and the alien descending into the crater. No one doubted Clarkton’s veracity or professionalism, but the nature of their claims was naturally unbelievable.
Three black SUVs with blackout windows rolled up on the scene. Two men emerged from each vehicle, each wearing black suits and ties with dark sunglasses.
“Who is that?” Nicole asked.
“Homeland Security,” Clarkton said. “Let me handle this.”
Clarkton approached the lead agent and identified himself with his badge and ID. The agent said something to quietly to be heard. Clarkton asked him to repeat himself, and after he did, Clarkton let loose with a stream of profanity that few of his colleagues had ever heard.
Clarkton returned to Murphy and Nicole and said, “We have to go with them.”
