“Are we being charged?” Clarkton asked. None of the agents identified themselves, so Clarkton assigned them the names Smith, Jones, and Johnson. This was Smith.
“None of you are considered suspects,” Smith said. “You’re witnesses to an unusual occurrence, and we want to make sure that we collect your testimony independently.”
“If I’m a witness, why am I in a holding cell?” Clarkton said.
“You understand that this is protocol,” Smith said. “We have to be accountable for our investigation in the same way you are.”
“Bullshit,” Clarkton said. “I know a cover-up when I see one.”
“Why did you keep your operation secret, detective?” Smith asked. “Your only partners were a low-level deputy and a young mortician. You didn’t inform your superior officer or ask for state resources. Why was that?”
“Because no one would have believed us.”
“Believed what?”
“You tell me. What was that thing?”
“A species we’ve never encountered before,” Smith said. “It probably crashed here hundreds of years before this area was explored, much less settled. As you deduced, the fracking operation most likely unearthed it.”
“Are there other alien species you have encountered before?” Clarkton said.
Smith didn’t say anything, but Clarkton knew the answer.
“You’re wasting your time with us,” Clarkton said. “I know protocol as well as you do. You can interview us a hundred times, and you’ll get the same story because we’re telling the truth.”
“We already knew that before we left the site,” Smith said. “As you said—protocol.”
