Nicole’s view of the sinkhole plunged into darkness as the creature descended upon the truck. She wasn’t scared; she was fascinated to study an alien creature close-up.
Nicole could see why Tippen thought it was an insect, while to her it was shaped like a manta ray—the creature had no form of its own; it could shape-shift into whatever appearance suited its needs.
The creature had no physical features to observe other than blackness; nothing like skin, scales, or fur was apparent, nor a head, or eyes, or a mouth. It was a shifting shadow of empty darkness.
One end of its body formed into a flat extension that slipped in the crack between the hood and windshield. A moment later, the blackness seeped through the air conditioning vents in the dashboard.
The curious part of her wanted to observe it for a few moments more, but the more rational part remembered the blank stare of the dead, and she flipped the switch on the UV lamp.
As the blue light struck the tendrils of black, they recoiled and receded as if they had been burned. She pointed the UV lamp up against the windshield, and the creature folded in on itself like a collapsing umbrella. Nicole felt with certainty that she had somehow blinded it, as it collapsed to the ground like a flattened balloon.
Emboldened by her success, she rolled down the window to extend the lamp onto the retreating creature; perhaps she could kill it now.
