Nicole left the bodies uncovered, and Murphy propped open the door that Tippen had used. The three of them waited in the parking lot to see what would happen next.
“Do you think they’re dangerous?” Murphy asked.
“Hard to say,” Clarkton said. “In the movies, they’re always feral.”
“Their brains are dead, so something else is causing them to move,” Nicole said. “They may have human bodies, but they’re not people anymore.”
“I’m worried because we’re letting them walk around,” Murphy said. “What if they encounter a live person and attack them?”
“The fact that Tippen hasn’t shown up in someone’s yard is a good sign,” Clarkton said. “We’ve got enough shotguns here for the three of us if this group starts any zombie shit.”
They had to wait for hours until anything happened. Clarkton saw them first and nudged Murphy, who turned around and awakened Nicole, who had curled up asleep in the back seat.
Clarkton shifted the SUV into four-wheel-drive mode and followed the group through the field. He turned his headlights on, prepared to switch them off if the dead men reacted, but they did not deviate from their path.
They came to a creek, and Clarkton had to detour onto the road to cross it. He stayed on the road and kept a spotlight on the men. They continued until they emerged onto Highway 60. They crossed both lanes and turned west.
“I’ll bet you a cup of coffee I know where they’re going,” Clarkton said.
