“Cover him up and lock the door,” Clarkton said. “I’ve got an idea.”
“Shouldn’t we call the coroner?”
“She’ll be with us when this happens,” Clarkton said. “If the time’s the same as Tippen, Carl will be on the move sometime tonight.”
“On the move?” Murphy said. “What are you talking about, Joe?”
Clarkton filled him in on the events at the funeral home.
“If anyone else had told me such a thing, Joe, I’d have thought they were crazy.”
“I’m not certain of that myself,” Clarkton said, “but that’s what the evidence says.”
“What about these other bodies, the ones we’re bringing in today?” Murphy asked.
“We’ll tell Nicole to keep them locked in the cooler,” Clarkton replied.
Murphy followed Clarkton out to his crime scene van, where they found the mayor, Lloyd Davis, waiting for them. He was smoking a cigarette and looking despondent.
“They’ve found more bodies in the woods?” Davis asked.
“You already know that or you wouldn’t be here,” Clarkton replied. “How can I help you?”
“Deer season starts next week,” Davis said. “If word gets out that hunters are being killed, it will wreck the whole season for us. Hotels, restaurants, our whole economy counts on hunting season.”
“It’s already hunting season,” Clarkton said. “We’re the ones who are being hunted.”
“You have to do something to stop this,” Davis said.
“Does it look like I’m going on vacation?” Clarkton asked. “You do your job, and step aside and let me do mine.”
