Chapter Four: Mistaken

Aidan’s favorite invisibility spell worked like a series of small mirrors that made the person blend into their surroundings. However, it could be detected if someone suspected an intruder was nearby, and it wasn’t useful for moving quickly, either.
“Are you sure this will work?” Beca asked.
“Are you sure the book said the headmaster?” Bryn asked. “What if you’re mistaken?”
“It said ‘The Master Book of Spells,’ which we know resides in the headmaster’s office,” Aiden said. “When did you two become cowards?”
“We’re not cowards,” Beca said. “We don’t want to clean the privies for a year if we get caught.”
“Fine,” he said. “Let me pass through the door, and I’ll go in alone. You’re both invisible, so if you hear me shout, you can walk away and return to your quarters.”
“I’ll whistle if we see someone coming,” Bryn said. Beca cast her spell, and Aidan passed through it, his spell shimmering like fireflies as he passed through the doorway.
The headmaster’s office was dark, so Aidan cast a dim light orb spell to see. They had been caught here several times, but not as many as they had been inside undetected. Aidan knew where the headmaster kept his books, and on this night, the one he needed sat on a worktable surrounded by scraps of parchment upon which were scribbled words and numbers and symbols that make no sense to Aidan. He opened the book and began to search for the secret spell.
