Osric braced himself for a wild ride, then dug both his boots into the bear’s skin. Nothing. He tried again, then a third time, and then realized the bear was too big to feel him. This was good news for his escape, but now the problem was awakening the bear in the first place.
“Can you make a loud noise?” he asked Lavender.
“I can, but you have to put your fingers in your ears, or you’ll go deaf.”
“How am I supposed to hold on to the bear?”
“Grab hold as soon as it moves.”
“As soon as it’s awake, fly through the exit,” Osric said, “but make sure it follows you.”
“When it hears this sound, it will want to kill me,” Lavender said. She flew near the bear’s head and let out a scream more horrible than anything Osric had heard. It was worse than a thousand rabbits with their legs caught in traps. He couldn’t have avoided plugging up his ears if he wanted to. The noise was so horrible, all he wanted to do was make it stop.
The bear awoke, and to Osric’s relief, it was too big to move with a sharp jerk, so he found a safe grip before it moved toward Lavender, who was still screaming. She stopped once the exit was clear and shot through the opening, the bear thundering through the space in pursuit. The tunnel grew lighter and larger as the bear gained momentum.
“Fly faster!” Osric shouted.
