Chapter 18: Mirror

Blogtober 2020 Day 17 Post

Meadow said goodbye the next morning. She only had one day to get what she needed for her plan to save her friends. Murphy couldn’t speak without breaking into tears, so Phin said what they both felt.

“We love you,” Phin said. “Him different than me, but you know what I mean.”

“We love you too,” she said. “Don’t worry. You’ll both be home soon.”

She hugged Phin, then she kissed Murphy on both cheeks and held him tightly. “Don’t forget the vision,” she whispered.

Before she left, she led them to her lodge to meet with her father. The boys had learned to speak his Osage name, though between them, they had taken to calling him “Dr. Storm.”

He spoke to them in English for the first time. “You have been true to your word,” he began. “The people have seen you have good hearts. Our chief says it was wise to let you stay. You must be brave, but first, there is one thing you must learn.”

He went to where Meadow kept her things and picked up a small silver mirror, one of a few things she kept from her first home. He handed it to Phin.

“Look,” he said, and then he gave Murphy the mirror.

“Look,” he said again. “Who do you see?”

“It’s me,” Phin said. “It’s him. It’s our reflection.”

“No,” Storm said. “Look again. You are Wazhazhe. You are one of the people. Remember who you are, not what you were.”
