Chapter 17: Necklace

Blogtober 2020 Day 17 Post

The Kansas posse arrived ten days later. Storm rode out with four other braves to meet them. The white men respected the tribal boundaries, but they made it clear that the two who helped rob the Wells Fargo office were wanted men, and they would face justice.

Justice would extend to the Osage if they harbored the fugitives. Storm negotiated terms for their surrender, and the posse accepted.

Meadow met her father in private and pleaded for her friends. “They never shot anyone,” she said. “The other man threatened to kill them if they didn’t obey him.”

“We all make choices, Little Bird,” he said. “We must also face the consequences.”

“What if they were Wazhazhe?” she said. “Would you stand by and watch them hang?”

“We cannot win a war with white men,” he said. “They will drive us from our land like cattle as they have done so many times.”

“What if we weren’t the ones who saved them?” she asked.

“What do you mean?”

“I have an idea.”

She met with Phin and Murphy late that night and told them her plan. They were afraid of what might happen to them, but each boy was far more concerned with the future of the tribe if they didn’t go along.

“These are for you,” she said, holding a beaded necklace out for each of them. “So you don’t forget.” They knew the necklaces were given to new braves before their first test.

“We won’t forget you,” she said.
